Some symptoms cannot wait. Learn the warning signs that mean your dog needs veterinary care right away.
A swollen, hard belly with unproductive retching (possible bloat), collapse, seizures lasting more than a couple of minutes, difficulty breathing, pale gums, or suspected poisoning are emergencies. Call the clinic while you are on your way.
Repeated vomiting or diarrhea, refusing food and water, straining to urinate without result, eye injuries, or sudden lameness with severe pain should be seen the same day.
A single vomit, mild limping that improves, or one loose stool in an otherwise alert dog can often be watched for a day. Contact your vet if it does not improve or your gut feeling says something is wrong.
