Teaching your dog to settle

Relaxing on a mat or in a crate is a skill, and one of the most useful things a dog can learn.

Why switching off matters

Many dogs get plenty of activity but little practice at doing nothing. Adult dogs sleep for a large part of the day and puppies even more, and an overtired dog is often more nippy, noisy and restless, not less.

Build it step by step

Choose a mat or bed and reward the dog for lying on it calmly. Gradually ask for longer stays, give a chew or a food toy there, and practise while you read or watch TV. Release the dog with a word before it gets up on its own.

Crates done kindly

If you use a crate, make it a cosy den with a bed and treats, and start with the door open. Close it only for short periods while the dog is relaxed, and build up slowly. A crate should never be used as punishment or for long hours.
