A reliable recall gives your dog more freedom and can save its life. Build it step by step.
Start indoors. Say your recall word once, sound happy, and reward generously when the dog arrives — jackpot treats, play, then release the dog back to what it was doing so recall never means fun is over.
Practice on a long line in gradually harder environments. If the dog fails twice in a row, the step was too big — go back to where it succeeds. Never call for something unpleasant like a bath or nail trim.
Only use your recall word when you would bet money the dog will come. In emergencies, run away from the dog while calling — chasing you is more fun than being chased.
