Understanding and reducing barking

Barking is communication — solve the reason behind it rather than just silencing the sound.

Why dogs bark

Dogs bark to alert, to demand attention, out of boredom, from fear or frustration, or in excitement. Watch when and where it happens: the trigger tells you which approach will actually work.

What not to do

Shouting adds to the noise and can look like you are joining in, while punishment often worsens fear-based barking. Anti-bark shock and citronella collars are stressful and treat the symptom, not the cause.

Reduce it kindly

Meet the underlying need: more exercise and enrichment for boredom, calm counter-conditioning for triggers, and rewarding quiet rather than reacting to noise. For demand barking, reward silence and avoid giving in the instant the dog barks.
