Contracts and paperwork for puppy sales

A clear written contract protects the buyer, the breeder and above all the puppy.

What the contract covers

Price and deposit terms, the handover date, the puppy's health at the time of sale and what happens if hidden defects appear. Many breeders also include breeding or show terms and a clause that the dog is offered back to the breeder rather than sold on. Consumer law in many countries gives buyers rights that a contract cannot remove.

Paperwork at handover

Prepare the registration certificate or proof that registration is under way, the vaccination record or passport, the microchip registered to the buyer, a vet health check and a puppy pack with food, a feeding plan and care advice. Many kennel clubs offer model contracts you can start from.

Keep it all together

Store contracts, deposits and buyer details in one place, so you can answer questions years later. In the app, the buyer, the reservation, the deposit and the transfer to the new owner stay linked to each puppy.
