Insemination opens up stud dogs far away, but timing and paperwork matter even more than with a natural mating.
Fresh semen is collected and used right away, chilled semen can be shipped and used within a few days, and frozen semen can be stored for years and brought in from across the world. Fertility generally falls from fresh to frozen, so the timing has to be more exact the further you go.
Progesterone testing is essential, especially with frozen semen, which survives only a short time after thawing and is usually placed directly in the uterus by a vet. Plan the collection and shipping with the stud owner and the clinic well in advance.
Kennel clubs have their own rules for registering litters from insemination, often including a vet's certificate and, for imported semen, DNA or other documents. Check the requirements before you book, and keep every certificate together with the litter's records.
